History

The suburb is geographically significant. It is built across the Athelstane Range. Agnes Street approximates the ridgeline.

The suburb’s name originates from the Athelstane Range. This was named in conjunction with Mt Athelstane. Mt Athelstane is the house of lands commissioner William Wiseman, dating back to the 1850s.

The first water storage facility in the area began in 1875 at the top of Governor’s Hill.

Rockhampton Grammar School is one of the oldest independent schools in Queensland. It dates back to 1883. The school is heritage-listed along with the botanical gardens and war memorial. A number of other local properties also have heritage listings.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

The area is popular with families as it has great infrastructure and access to the best local schools. There are many open spaces for sport. Residents commute to the nearby centre of Rockhampton for work.
