Tara is in Tara Shire in the Western Downs region of Queensland. It is a diverse rural community nearly 300km west-north-west of Brisbane. In 2011, the population was 855.

History

The locality took its name from the Tara pastoral station which was one of several in the area during the 1850s. It became a township in the early 1900s and was home to boarding houses, a surveyor’s camp and a store.

The prickly pear epidemic in the 1920s destroyed much of the land around Tara leaving it destitute. Thanks to the construction of the railway line, the sleeper cutting industry brought life back to the town.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Tara’s primary industries are wheat, wool, beef and gas. The biennial Tara Festival of Culture and Camel Races is a three-day celebration of the area’s heritage and culture. It features two days of camel racing and a day devoted to foods of the world.

The town is close to Southwood National Park. It is home to a diverse collection of wildlife including 92 species of birds.
