Surfers Paradise is a lively suburb located on the Gold Coast, just 73km from Brisbane. It has a population of around 20,000 people as is known as being the entertainment and tourism centre of the Gold Coast.

History

The first European to settle in the area was a farmer named James Beattie who owned an 80-acre farm on the banks of the Nerang River.

Surfers Paradise is synonymous with tourism and the first hotel was built by the German Immigrant Johan Meyer in the late 1800s when the area was known as Elston. It wasn’t until 1917 when the name ‘Surfers Paradise’ was first coined in a successful bid to attract residents.

It is named Surfers Paradise because of its stunning beaches and ideal surfing conditions. The area has become a much-loved holiday destination with its mixture of vibrant nightlife and busy shopping strips.

Surfers Paradise also boasts a stunning skyline of high-rise buildings containing residential apartments and office space.
