Springsure is a small rural outback town in the Central Highlands Region of Queensland. It is the main centre for Bauhinia Shire. Lying 66km south of Emerald and 765km north-west of Brisbane, it has a population of 829.
History
The town took its name from the springs and creeks located in the area at the time of settlement. The area was inhabited by Aborigines for thousands of years prior to European occupation. Ludwig Leichhardt, a German pioneer was the first European to explore the land in the mid-1840s.
In November 1943, a Douglas C-47A Skytrain crashed just south of Springsure due to a treacherous weather. All 19 people on board were killed.
Lifestyle and Entertainment
Sitting in a pleasant valley with Mt Zamia as a backdrop, Springsure is surrounded by natural beauty. The famous Virgin Rock said to mirror the Virgin Mary cradling baby Jesus, overlooks the town.
There are a number of historical sites near the town including the Staircase Range Cutting. Built in 1905 by Chinese labour, is a fitting memory to the early wagon trails that served the town.
