Sippy Downs is home to 9,087 people according to the 2011 census. It is part of the Buderim urban centre and is a suburb of Queensland’s Sunshine Coast region.

History

Sippy Downs’ name comes from the indigenous word ‘dhippi’, used to describe winged beings. It received this name due to the abundance of native birds in the area.

John Westaway and his sons settled the area in the 1860s. It was a part of the Moolooloo Plains pastoral run. When this ceased in 1870, the land became available for lease. Sippy Downs officially became a suburb in 1993.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Sippy Downs features the University of the Sunshine Coast, which opened in 1996. The area also features multiple high schools, as well as a Montessori college.

The Queensland government has recognised Sippy Downs as a ‘Knowledge Hub’. It is designed to provide housing for over 6,000 workers in knowledge-based positions.
