Sherwood is a Brisbane suburb found 8km to the south west of the central business district. It falls under the City of Brisbane local government area, and has a population of more than 5,000.

History

Sherwood’s origins lie in the fertile lands around the Oxley Creek. A broad, disconnected community of farms sprang up here in the 1860s, scattered about and growing steadily. Sherwood Primary School was built in 1867, which is where the modern-day suburb gets its name. The suburb was connected to the railway line in 1875. Sherwood was once considered its own shire, although it became part of the City of Brisbane in 1925.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

A green and quiet suburb, Sherwood is a much sought-after place to live. It still retains many of its older buildings, including Queenslander and colonial-style houses. Amongst Sherwood’s Heritage sites is the Sherwood Arboretum, a sweeping botanical garden and wetlands nature park. The suburb’s main street, Sherwood Road, contains numerous shopping and dining options.
