A popular part of the Hervey Bay urban area, Scarness is found 32km north-west of Maryborough. This relaxed coastal locality has a population of over 3,300, and borders east Pialba.
History
Scarness has always been a top vacation spot, with people building holiday homes here as far back as the 1890s. Their numbers only increased as the years wore on. The name ‘Scarness’ came from the legendary Scarborough Hotel, which still stands to this day.

From sailing to whale watching, Scarness offers the full seaside package. There’s a range of boutique shops and cafes, and the seafood is gorgeous.
If you’re looking to learn, the Hervey Bay Historical Village & Museum offers great insight into the region’s past. It features 21 historical buildings (including a functioning blacksmith), with loads of interactive fun on offer. The Hervey Bay Esplanade is another local favourite, as is the maritime playground in Scarness Park.
