Rockhampton is a major city in Central Queensland. It’s built on the Fitzroy River, just north of the Tropic of Capricorn. Rockhampton gets more than 300 days of sunshine annually, which is just one of the reasons why it’s a tourist haven. The city has a population of over 80,600.

History

The land beneath Rockingham was first home to the Darumbal people. It was explored by Europeans in the 1840s, but Rockingham wasn’t officially declared a town until 1858. Gold was discovered in Mt Morgan in the 1880s, and Rockingham became the primary benefactor of its wealth. It was named a city in 1902. The odd cyclone aside, it’s continued to prosper ever since.

Amongst many other things, Rockingham is the beef capital of Australia. That means a good steak or burger is guaranteed wherever you go to eat. Mt Archer National Park, the Capricorn Caves and Rockhampton Botanic Gardens are just a few of the treats in store for those who crave the open air. There’s also Rockingham Zoo, the Archer Rail Park Museum, the Dreamtime Cultural Centre, and plenty more to keep visitors amused.
