The town of Redlynch has a population of more than 8,500 people. It is a suburb of Cairns in Queensland.

History

The residential town was named after Redlynch in Somerset, England. It developed in the 1920s as an important sugar growing district.

Lying in the valley of Freshwater Creek, the town is surrounded by undeveloped bushland. The local terrain is steep and rises up to the Barron Gorge National Park. The area is popular with tourists and famed for its rainforest.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

The town of Redlynch has two stations on the popular tourist attraction, the Kuranda Scenic Railway.

Redlynch has a number of heritage buildings including the Cairns to Kuranda rail line. It is also home to Xavier and Sadie Herbert’s Cottage. The former home of the Australian author Xavier is an example of the type of homes built in the town during the 1920s.
