Port Douglas is a sophisticated and upmarket resort town in Far North Queensland. It lies 70 kilometres north of Cairns and has a population of over 3,205.
History
Port Douglas was first inhabited in 1877 after the discovery of gold on the Hodgkinson River. It became the main port in the area for the dispatch of gold and tin. The town quickly grew and at its most productive, has 27 hotels and a population of 12,000.
After the completion of the Kuranda Railway in 1891, Port Douglas was no longer classed as a strategic area. The population declined as did the economy.
