Based in Queensland’s Gold Coast, Ormeau is a hinterland suburb and town. 41km north of Surfers Paradise, it has a population of over 12,400 people. Ormeau’s native name is “Nulgul”, which is an Aboriginal word meaning dingo.

History

The township of Ormeau went through a number of name changes between the years of 1860 and 1890. The original name of the town was Pimpama. However, this changed to Old Pimpama. After some confusion, the town’s name changed to Pimpama Bridge.

In 1889, the town finally took the name of Ormeau. The name “Ormeau” came from the estate of a sugar planter called Major Alexander Jenyns Boyd. In French, Ormeau means “young elm tree”.

Ormeau is popular with families and sports enthusiasts. The town boasts six schools, including Ormeau State School and The Toogoolawa School. Local sports fans support the AFL team, the Ormeau Bulldogs.
