History

North Ipswich was founded in a u-bend in the River Bremen. In 1864, it was chosen as the starting point for Queensland’s very first railway line, with the first train setting off for Grandchester one year later. The railway let the suburb thrive, and many other businesses sprang up here in the 19th and 20th centuries.

The railway plays a prominent role in North Ipswich’s attractions. The large Riverlink Shopping is built on the site of the original Queensland Rail site, and the Workshops Rail Museum draws in many visitors. North Ipswich features many Heritage-listed sites, such as the Hotel Cecil, Railway Historical Centre, and Heiner Road Railway Overpass. Local parks include Morgan Park, Simmons Road Park and Telegraph Lane Park.
