Newmarket is a suburb in Brisbane’s inner north, and is governed by the City of Brisbane. It has a population of 4,444 as of the 2011 census. The suburb is 5km from Brisbane’s central business district.

History

Although it is known as Newmarket today, the suburb was once known as “The Three Mile Suburb” as it was so close to the city. Settlement in the area began in the late 1800s, and a train line was also built during this time. Newmarket’s most prominent landmark is the Newmarket Brickworks Chimney, which is 50m tall and was constructed in 1912.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Newmarket has plenty to offer for both locals and visitors. There is a public swimming pool in the area, as well as multiple sporting ovals. One of the ovals, Spencer Park, is home to Brisbane’s Premier League team. Newmarket also has a shopping centre with a supermarket, bank, and specialty stores.
