History

Nanango developed around farming and timber-cutting. The town was surveyed in 1861. The gold rush of 1867 attracted many prospectors. However, little gold was found.

The construction of Tarong Power Station in 1971 caused a population boom.

Power and timber remain important industries in Nanango. The area is a centre for beef, pork, and dairy production.
Nanango is popular with tourists. It forms a gateway to explore nearby towns and natural features. The Bunya Mountains, Coomba Falls and Seven Mile Diggings are within an easy drive.
