Murarrie is a residential and industrial suburb of Brisbane, Queensland. It is located 8km from the Central Business District and has a population of 3,958.

History

Murarrie took its name from Mooraree House built by Christopher Porter in the 1860s. Porter was an architect and sugar plantation owner. Mooraree is an Aboriginal word meaning sticky or muddy.

Over the years, Murarrie has housed a number of meatworks factories. The railway line, running from Wynnum and Cleveland to Brisbane, passed through the suburb in 1882. The meat industry was serviced by this railway line. A post office opened in 1892, followed by a primary school in 1926.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Murarrie lies on the southern banks of the Brisbane River. The suburb has a recreation ground which is located next to Bulimba Creek. There are also two churches and a bulk sugar terminal. Two of Brisbane’s newspapers, The Courier-Mail and The Sunday Mail are published in Murarrie.

A large part of Murarrie, mostly the area by the Bulimba Creek, is wetland.
