Mudgeeraba is a suburb in the Gold Coast Hinterland area of South East Queensland. It has a population of over 13,000.

History

Mudgeeraba may have gotten its name from an Indigenous saying. It means either “place of infant’s excrement”, “place where someone told lies”, or “place of sticky soil”. The name might also mean “low-lying ground”.

By the mid-1870s, Mudgeeraba was an early centre for farming, timber getting, and cattle grazing.

In 1903, the suburb became well-known in the area with the coming of the railway from Brisbane to Tweed Heads.

The suburb holds much of its nineteenth-century village character.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Mudgeeraba is home to a number of local heritage-listed sites. These include Mudgeeraba Old Post Office, Wallaby Hotel, Mudgeeraba State School, Hardy’s House, and Hardy’s Bridge.

Many sporting teams represent the suburb including the local rugby team the Mudgeeraba Redbacks. The suburb is also home to many schools.
