Mt Isa, locally referred to as “The Isa”, is a city in Queensland in the Gulf Country region. 1,830km northwest of Brisbane, it has a population of around 22,000.
History
In 1923, Mt Isa was set up due to the many mineral deposits that can be found in the area. The Mt Isa Mines is one of the most productive in world history based on the combined production of zinc, copper, lead, and silver.
In 1923, prospector John Campbell Miles was taken to the deposits by a young Aboriginal man by the name of Kabalulumana during his expedition into the Northern Territory.
In 1924, Mt Isa Post Office opened.
Lifestyle and Entertainment
Because of all the lead production, the city has one of the most intensive air quality monitoring systems in the country.
The artificial Lake Moondarra, 19km north of the city, provides the area with its drinking water. It is a popular destination for watersports and birdwatching.
