Mitchelton is a suburb in Queensland in the City of Brisbane, 8km from the CBD. It has a population of over 8,000.

History

Mitchelton takes its name from one of the first European families to settle in the area, the Mitchell family. Moving from England in the 1850s, Nicolas Mitchell bought an estate which he named “Mitchelton” by 1975.

In the 1890s, the area of Mitchelton was subdivided. The Grovely primary school was opened in 1916 with its name changing to Mitchelton in 1925. Two years later, a railway line from Mayne to Mitchelton began its operation.

Mitchelton is home to many schools including Mitchelton State School, Mitchelton State High School, and Mitchelton Special School. It also has numerous shops and facilities including the Brookside Shopping Centre, the largest shopping centre in Brisbane’s northwest.

The suburb is home to many sporting teams that take part in state competitions.
