Mermaid Beach is a seaside suburb of Queensland’s Gold Coast City. It’s bordered by Mermaid Waters and the Pacific Ocean, as well as the suburbs of Broad Beach and Miami. Mermaid Beach has a population of more than 5,700.

History

Officially named in 1946, Mermaid Beach gets its unusual moniker from the HMS Mermaid. This was the vessel of John Oxley, the explorer who discovered the Tweed and Brisbane rivers. During the Second World War, United States Army troops were stationed in the suburb. They founded the Mermaid Beach Lifesaving Club, which still operates to this day.

Thanks to its beautiful stretch of coast, Mermaid Beach enjoys a thriving tourism industry. The suburb is dotted with many cafes, restaurants and bars, as well as numerous shops. Mermaid Beach features several resorts, including Diamond Cove, Turtle Bay Resort and Diamond Sands Resort. The beach is known as a surfing hotspot.
