Macgregor is a residential suburb of Brisbane, Queensland, in the Australian Federal electorate of Moreton. 12km from Brisbane, it has a population of over 5,500.

History

Macgregor was named in 1967 after William MacGregor. He was the Governor of Queensland from 1909 to 1914 and was the first Chancellor of the University of Queensland in 1911. He was also Administrator of British New Guinea from 1887 to 1898.

Two years after the suburb was named, the state high school opened. The Garden City regional shopping centre opened at the north edge of the suburb in 1970.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Macgregor is home to a primary school that opened in 1972 and a high school that opened in 1969. The High School is notable due to a tornado that hit it in November 1973, creating hundreds of thousands of dollars’ worth of damage.

Like its surrounding suburbs, Macgregor has a very diverse multicultural community.
