A suburb on the Gold Coast in Queensland, Labrador has a population of over 16,000. Labrador overlooks the Southport on the southern border and the Gold Coast Broadwater to the east.

History

In the late 19th century, Scottish Engineer Robert Muir is said to have named the area after the region of Labrador, a local fishery in north-eastern Canada. This was due to the similarities between the places – both having a peninsula shape and both being great spots for recreational fishing.

Labrador is known for the Labrador Hotel which was completely destroyed by a fire in 1888 and the Grand Hotel which became a local landmark by 1922 but was destroyed by a fire in 1975. The Grand, a hotel built in a Queenslander style, was opened in 2001.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

The Gold Coast City Council supports the Labrador Heritage Walk and produces a guide booklet including twenty-one places of historical significance and interest.
