Based in the Gympie region of Queensland, Kilkivan is a small town. It lies on the Wide Bay Highway and is 224km north of Brisbane. Kilkivan has a population of 691 people. A pastoralist by the name of John Daniel Mactaggart named Kilkivan after his father’s farm in Kintyre, Scotland.
History
The Gubbi Gubbi tribe are the original inhabitants of Kilkivan. However, the 1840s brought the first wave of European settlers. In 1852, the discovery of gold in Kilkivan resulted in huge population growth.
In 1868, the Kilkivan Post Office Opened. Eight years later, the Kilkivan State School opened.

Kilkivan is popular with visitors who want to find out more about Australia’s early pioneers. They can do so in the Kilkivan and District Museum. Kilkivan retains its charming historical atmosphere. The town is filled with antique stores, a historical walk, and original bank.
Every year in April, Kilkivan holds the Kilkivan Great Horse Ride. In this event, over 1,000 horses travel 20-30km, ending in a Grand Parade down the main street.
Nature enthusiasts love visiting Mudio Gap. This is a forest park 8.5km north of the town.
