Kilcoy is a small rural town in the south-east region of Queensland on the D’Aguilar Highway. It is 94 kilometres north-west of Brisbane with a population of 1,714.
History
Kilcoy is steeped in aboriginal history. The Jinibara People peacefully lived in the area until the first European settlers arrived. Once known as Hopetown, the town became known as Kilcoy after the arrival of the MacKenzie brothers in 1841.
Kilcoy flourished thanks to the growth of the timber industry. By the early 1900’s, the town had a number of churches, schools, shops, businesses and a hospital.
Lifestyle and Entertainment
Kilcoy boasts many amenities including a racecourse, golf, bowls and swimming facilities. To the south of Kilcoy lies the Somerset Dam. This offers stunning views and many excellent picnic spots. The nearby Somerset Lake is ideal for watersports, walking and relaxing.
The town claims to be home to the mythical Yowie.
