Kelvin Grove is one of Brisbane’s inner suburbs. It lies 3km north of its central business district. Kelvin Grove has a population of over 6,000 people.

History

The suburb was named after Kelvingrove Park, a public park in Glasgow, Scotland. Before it merged with Brisbane in 1925, it was part of the Shire of Ithaca. Until 1998 it was home to the Gona Barracks. After the closures of the barracks, the city used the site to build the Kelvin Grove Urban Village. It opened in 2003.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Kelvin Grove is primarily a residential area. Trees line its streets which feature several traditional “Queenslander” homes as well as worker’s cottages and modern apartments.

In Kelvin Grove’s urban village you can also find a campus of the Queensland University of Technology. In the village’s Roundhouse Theatre the state’s second largest theatre company regularly puts on shows.
