With a population of 11,670, Indooroopilly is a suburb of Brisbane. The suburb covers over seven square kilometres. It sits seven kilometres from Brisbane’s central business district.

History

The name of the suburb has its roots in the local Aboriginal language. It means either “gully of running water” or “gully of the leeches”. The first European settlers arrived in the 1860s.

In World War II, the suburb hosted Australia’s main interrogation centre. Three cells remain at Wilton Barracks today. These are the only such cells extant in Australia. Taringa Rovers SFC, one of Brisbane’s oldest clubs, have called the area home since 1949.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

The suburb, known locally as Indro, boasts a range of facilities. These include a 36-hole golf course, as well as the largest shopping centre in Brisbane’s western suburbs.

Local landmarks include the Albert Bridge, the Walter Taylor Bridge and the Chapel of St Peter’s Lutheran College.
