Gordonvale is a small Queensland town located on the Mulgrave River. It’s part of the Cairns region, and has a population of more than 6,200.

History

Previously known as Mulgrave and then Nelson, Gordonvale evolved to service the miners and packers that often passed through. In 1882, businessman Andrew Lee On built the first of many sugar mills. Sugar would soon become Gordonvale’s main trade. It gained its first cinema in 1919, and was used as a base by American paratroopers during World War Two.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

These days, Gordonvale remains a popular destination. It has several Heritage sites, including the Alley Family Graves on the Gilles Highway. The Mulgrave Settlers museum sits opposite the main sugar mill, and offers great insight into Gordonvale’s past. The Goldsborough Valley State Forest is nearby, as is the Bellenden Ker National Park. The Great Pyramid Race and Country Fair is a lively event that attracts many visitors.
