The City of Gladstone is between two rivers, the Boyne and the Calliope. It has been the largest settlement in the area since it was joined with 2 other former local government areas. It has a population of nearly 50,000 people.

History

Until the first European settlers arrived around 1847 the area was home to the Toolooa, Mehrooni, and Baiali peoples. The first colony was founded by George Barney with 87 soldiers and convicts. They ran aground short of their destination and had to be rescued from a small Island after their ship ran aground.

Major development took off in the area when the meatworks was established. A Cyclone inflicted severe damage on the town in 1949 on March 2nd. The installation of a refinery by Queensland Alumina Limited on the site of the former meatworks in 1963 marked the start of a new era of prosperity.

The area boasts many heritage-listed building, a regional art gallery/museum, and a modern marina. There are many sporting facilities and the area is well served by schools. Close proximity to the Dawson Highway provides easy road access to the area.
