This large town has a population of more than 6,800 and lies to the west of Brisbane. It can be found in the Lockyer Valley, a relatively rural area.

History

Queensland’s south-eastern area was explored by Major Edmund Lockyer in the mid-1820s and the town of Gatton gazetted in 1855. After the arrival of the railway to Grandchester, Gatton saw major growth.

The town remains infamously linked with the unsolved Gatton Murders, when three youths from Blackfellows Creek were killed in 1898.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

The area around Gatton today is known for its agriculture, dairy and beef cattle farming. The tranquillity of the area is under threat today with encroaching development from Brisbane and Toowoomba.

One of the University of Queensland’s campuses lies just outside Gatton. The town itself also offers primary and high school education.
