Garbutt is a suburb of Townsville located 6.3km west of the central business district. It’s a mix of residential and industrial areas, and has a population of more than 2,400.

History

Named after its train station (itself named for pastoralist Charles Garbutt), Garbutt was once called Garbutt Siding. The station was renamed Garbutt in 1940, and the modern suburb came to be.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Garbutt is a vital part of the city thanks to several key facilities: Townsville Airport, RAAF Base Townsville, and the Bureau of Meteorology. Garbutt Shopping Village is a big retail hub, and there are three lush parks to explore.

Garbutt is handy for many Townsville attractions, with the RAAF Museum based in the suburb. For nature lovers, the Dan Gleeson Memorial Gardens are close as well. If a trip to the past is in order, the Townsville Museum and Historical Society is a must. The National Trust Heritage Centre is nearby, with Townsville Palmetum a bit further out.
