Fortitude Valley is a Brisbane suburb located 1km from the central business district. It’s the city’s entertainment capital, and has a population of more than 5,600.

History

Founded by Scottish immigrants, Fortitude Valley was named after the SS Fortitude on which they arrived. A post office popped up in the 1880s, and the settlement joined the Brisbane railway line soon after. Fortitude Valley grew into a thriving shopping district, until competition from new suburban retail centres caused a big decline. It became a haven for brothels and illegal gambling dens throughout the 1970s and 80s. In 1987, the opening of the Chinatown Mall signalled the start of a triumphant comeback.
