Edmonton is a suburb of Cairns with a population of 9,934. It is only 10km away from the city’s central business district.

History

The suburb was originally an independent township. The town was the site of a sugar mill. It took its name from the London Borough of the same name. As it expanded and grew more urbanised, it became a suburb of Cairns.

The railway came to Edmonton in 1911. In 2006, the town survived Tropical Cyclone Larry.

Visitors to Edmonton enjoy Sugarworld. This is a water park owned by the local council. It offers land occupied by local flora and fauna. There are also water slides, pools, and more. The park was renovated in 2011.

The Cairns Post newspaper operates in Edmonton. It is delivered to home throughout the suburb. There are also several schools, including Bentley Park College and Hambledon State School
