History

Drayton was once the main settlement in the Darling Downs region. The suburb began as farmland. Early settler Thomas Alford named the area after his hometown.

Settlers seeking water and fertile land soon moved to Toowoomba. Drayton became an outer suburb of the city.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Drayton has a mix of historic homes and mid-century dwellings. The area has a busy industrial and commercial district. It is close to the University of South Queensland. In recent years, students have moved into the area. Developers have built apartment blocks and new housing in response.

The suburb includes some heritage buildings. The Royal Bull’s Head Inn dates from 1847. The National Trust has maintained some rooms in their original, 1870s state.

Drayton has one primary school, a sporting complex and a local shopping strip.
