Coolangatta is a suburb at the far south of the City of Gold Coast. It has a population of more than 5,000.

History

The town was named after the shipwrecked schooner, the Coolangatta, which ran aground in 1846. It was one of the first settlements along the Gold Coast after the Europeans arrived in the late 1820s.

It served as a border town between QLD and NSW for most of the 1900s. There was a customs office, boatshed and government wharf in the town.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Today, Coolangatta is linked with Tweed Heads, NSW. The two towns have a joint economy that mostly revolves around tourism.

Fishing plays a large part in the local economy, and seafood is on offer throughout the two towns. It is a popular tourist and retirement destination.
