Cannon Hill is a suburb of Brisbane, 5km east of the CBD. Bordering Carina, Morningside, Murarrie, and Tingalpa, it has a population of over 4,500.

History

Cannon Hill probably gets its name from Cannon Hill House. It was home to the Weedon family from 1867 until it burnt down in 1927. The house was named after two fallen trees that looked like a cannon.

The area was originally home to Murris, but they were “dispersed” by the Native Police in 1861 around the time of European settlement to the area. Although some land was used for farming and grazing, the area mostly stayed bushland. The railway opened in 1861.

Cannon Hill is home to Cannon Hill State School, Cannon Hill Catholic Primary School, and Cannon Hill Anglican College.

It has many shops and restaurants. Many of these are in the major shopping centres Cannon Hill Shopping Plaza and Urban Village Cannon Hill.
