Based in Queensland, Cambooya is a locality and town in Toowoomba. According to the 2011 census, Cambooya has a population of over 1,200 people. The name “Cambooya” comes from the Aboriginal word “yambuya”. It means “tubers growing in a water hole”.

History

In 1840, European settlement arrived in Cambooya. Arthur Hodgson chose 65,000 acres of land and called it Eton Vale. Three years later, Christopher Rolleston, the NSW Commissioner of Crown Lands, conducted a survey. He reserved a site on Eton Vale and called it Cambooya. In 1868, Cambooya built its first railway station. In 1869, Cambooya Post Office opened.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

These days, Cambooya is a quiet town. It has one school, Cambooya State School, that has over 100 students. The town has a mobile library service that visits the school every Friday.

Locals enjoy visiting the Bull and Barley Inn. It is one of the town’s three pubs, and it’s only hotel.
