With a population of 147,993, Cairns is Queensland’s fifth most populous city. It sits on the east coast of Far North Queensland.

History

Captain Cook mapped the area that is now Cairns in 1770. He named in Trinity Bay. The city itself was founded in 1876. It took its name from the Governor of Queensland, William Wellington Cairns.

Originally, Cairns was built to make the export of gold easier. The city was a base of Allied military operations during World War II. An Air Force base used during the war became the Cairns International Airport, which opened in 1984.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Today, Cairns is a centre for tourism. Only Brisbane, Melbourne, and Sydney attract more visitors from overseas.

The city enjoys many beaches and is near to the Great Barrier Reef. Local heritage sites include the Cairns-to-Kuranda railway, the Cairns Control Room, and the Cairnes War Memorial.
