History

Before the development of the Varsity Lakes Area, Burleigh Waters was the Gold Coast canal’s southernmost point. From the 1970s, developers expanded the suburb in stages. In the late 1970s, the Hooker Corporation developed Burleigh Waters Estate.

According to local legend, sharks venture through the canal waterways towards Burleigh Waters. Although this urban legend spread through the area, few believed it. However, in 2003, a resident experienced a fatal attack by a bull whaler shark. After this, the public were warned to avoid swimming in the canals.
