History

The name Bundaberg came about when two words merged: bunda, an Indigenous Australian word meaning an important man, and the suffix –berg meaning town. Locals refer to the city as Bundy.

Bundaberg grew rapidly around the turn of the 20th Century. In 1902 it was classed as a town, and by 1913 it was a city.

The Bundaberg area is popular with tourists. For those interested in history, there are many heritage-listed sites in Bundaberg. It is near the Great Barrier Reef, and the Mon Repos Turtle Rookery is nearby. There are also a number of beaches in the area, and plenty of attractions in and around the city including the Australian Sugar Cane Railway and the Bundaberg Rum Distillery.
