Blackall is a rural town in the Central West region of Queensland. It’s located roughly 960km north-west of Brisbane. Blackall is the council seat of the Blackall-Tambo Region local government area. It has a population of more than 1,500.
History
European settlement of Blackall began in the 1840s, when Sir Thomas Mitchell first explored the area. It’s named in honour of Sir Samuel Blackall, who served as the second Governor of Queensland from 1868 to 1871. A post office called Barcoo was established in 1864, and renamed to Blackall four years later. The town was home to the Australian folk hero Jack Howe, who once shore 321 sheep in just under eight hours.
Lifestyle and Entertainment
Blackall is known for several major events, including the Blackall Flower Show and Blackall Heartland Festival. The Blackall Aquatic Centre features a swimming pool and a hot artesian spa, and the Blackall Woolscour is Australia’s last remaining steam-operated wool plant. Idalia National Park is found nearby, and the Prince of Wales Hotel is a friendly spot for a drink and a bite.
