Beerwah is a small, rural town in Queensland. It’s part of the Sunshine Coast Region, found to the north of the Glass House Mountains. Beerwah is 6km south of Landsborough and 70km north of Brisbane. It has a population of over 6,000.

History

The name Beerwah derives from the Kali word “birrawaman”. It’s an amalgamated term, with “birra” meaning “sky” and “wandum” meaning “climbing up”. Beerwah gained a post office in 1907, which replaced the old receiving office.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Beerwah is known across the world as the site of Steve Irwin’s Australia Zoo. This wildlife centre was founded by Steve’s father, Bob Irwin, who handed the reins to his to son in 1991. The Glass House mountain range is another big draw, with various scenic hiking paths. Beerwah is also home to the Big Mower, one of Australia’s tongue-in-cheek collection of ‘Big Things’. The town remains a popular stop for holidaymakers on their way to the Sunshine Coast.
