Beenleigh is a town and suburb in the City of Logan, Queensland. It has a population of over 8,000.

History

Beenleigh is the Yugambeh People’s country, who predate European settlement by tens of thousands of years. Their language and heritage survive and is honoured in the Yugambeh Museum in the town.

First colonised in the 1860s, the first permanent settlers were John Davy and Frank Gooding. They named their sugar cane plantation Beenleigh after their family estate in Devonshire, England.

In 1866, a government survey for the town was conducted. First opened in 1885, the town is a terminus for the Beenleigh railway line. It is also a stop on the South Coast railway line which reached Southport in 1889.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Beenleigh is known for the heritage-listed tourist attraction, the Beenleigh Artisan Distillery, and gives its name to Beenleigh Rum, one of Australia’s oldest brands of rum.
