History

Farmers settled the area of Banyo in 1849. Locals knew the suburb as Clapham Junction. Commissioner of Railways James Dixon named it Banyo in 1897. The indigenous word means ‘small hill’ or ‘a ridge’.

A railway line was laid through Banyo in 1882. As residential development increased, a station followed in 1912.

The Second World War turned Banyo from farmland into a bustling army depot. The US Army built many buildings in the area. They quarried the land to build an airport.

Golden Circle built a cannery at Banyo in 1947.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Banyo is a now a commercial centre. It has a number of business and industrial parks. Residential development is increasing. The Brisbane campus of Australian Catholic University is in Banyo. This has boosted demand for housing.
