Banana is a rural town in Central Queensland. It lies about 45km west of the region’s administrative centre, Biloela. In 2011 Banana had a population of just over 350 people.

History

The town was not named after the yellow fruit but after a dun-coloured ox named Banana. The animal helped the stockmen with the herding of some of the less tame animals.

Gold was found in the area in the second half of the 19th century. The town grew rapidly and by 1861 Banana had its own post office. A school followed in the 1870s.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

The region around Banana is full of natural resources. Coal mining and beer production are two of the main industries.

The area is also very attractive for tourists as there are many natural wonders to discover with the Expedition National Park and Lake Murphy being nearby.
