Based in Queensland, Balmoral is an inner suburb in the City of Brisbane. It lies in the state electorate of Bulimba and the federal division of Griffith. Balmoral lies 9km east of Brisbane’s Central Business District. According to the 2011 census, it has a population of over 3800 people.

History

Balmoral takes its name from the Scottish Gaelic phrase “Baile Mhoireil”. This phrase means “majestic castle” or “beautiful residence”. Due to the lack of a bridge crossing, the area remained fairly undeveloped until 1856. Once European settlers arrived, the area became a growing point for farms, bananas, cotton, and sugar.

In 1958, the suburb opened Balmoral State High School. This is the only high school in the suburb.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Balmoral is a tiny suburb with little to do. However, locals enjoy visiting local food spots. These include the Ooniverse Café and Pompidou Café.
