Ashgrove is an upmarket suburb located 4km north-west of the Brisbane central business district. It is a mainly residential area with a population of around 13,000 people.

History

Ashgrove was originally inhabited by the indigenous ‘Turrbal’ people, also known as the ‘Duke of York Clan’. They called the area ‘Kallindarbin’ but European settlers renamed it Ashgrove on account of the ash trees which grew here. The main road, Waterworks Road, was once a Turrbal pathway which led to Mt Coot-tha and the Enoggera Reservoir, a heritage-listed Dam.

Freehold land in the area was entirely sold by 1875 and a school and post office were established soon after.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Ashgrove is home to many heritage-listed sites including St John’s Wood House, also known as Granite House. The suburb has a number of restaurants, cafes and shops with most located in the main commercial area of Waterworks Road.
