History
Airlie Beach takes its name from the Scottish parish of Airlie. The name was suggested by Robert Shepherd, Chairman of the Proserpine Shire Council. The suburb was named simply Airlie until 1987.
The area was visited by Captain Cook in the 1770s. Cook is the source of the name of the Whitsunday Region as a whole.
Lifestyle and Entertainment
Many tourists visit Airlie Beach and the Whitsunday Islands. The suburb and the surrounding region enjoy a tropical climate. It is an especially popular destination for backpackers.
The Great Barrier Reef is a famous local attraction. Most of the tours depart from the Abell Point Marina. The Port of Airlie is newer. Airlie Beach also features a swimming lagoon.
