Young is a pretty suburb in New South Wales, home to nearly 7,000 people. It’s part of the South West Slopes region and can be found in a valley just off the Olympic Highway. Canberra is around a two-hour car journey away.

History

Young gets its name from Sir John Young, who served as Governor of New South Wales in the 1860s. The first European settler in Young was James White, who claimed 100 square miles in the area and established Burrangong Station in 1826.

In 1860, gold was discovered in Young. Nearly 20,000 miners working in the goldfields found over 15,000 kilograms of gold.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Every year, the National Cherry Festival is held in Young. This tends to take place in the first week of December and involves cherry pie eating competitions, live music and a Christmas market.

There are six schools in Young, making the neighbourhood the ideal place for young families to set up home.
