Yass has a population of 5,591. It is a historic town in the Southern Tablelands of New South Wales. The Yass River flows past the town.
History
The town takes its name from the Aboriginal word Yarrh, meaning running water. The first European settlers arrived in 1821. Permanent settlement began in 1830 when the Sydney to Melbourne road crossed the Yass River.
The area around Yass is famous for producing merino fleece. However, there have always been a lot of flour mills in town. In 1901, Yass was one of the several sites proposed for the Federal Capital.

Yass has much historical interest. The town’s main street is lined with 19th-century veranda post pubs. Popular local attractions include Cooma Cottage, St Augustine’s Catholic Church, and Yass & District Museum.
Other local landmarks include the Post Office, the Soldiers Memorial Hall, and Yass Mechanics Institute.
