History

The suburb of Yarramundi was once called Kearns Retreat. It now takes its name from an Indigenous Australian person. Yarramundi was a doctor. Europeans knew him as the ‘chief of the Richmond tribe’.

An aerial ropeway existed here until a flood in 1927. Following that, a railway took its place. Until 1946, this railway ran and operated private locomotives. More recently however, road trucks have been installed as the primary mode of transport.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Sport and recreation have played a key role in Yarramundi’s development. Camp Yarramundi is part of the YMCA. The camp sits along the Grose River in Hawkesbury Valley.

Cycling is a popular pastime in this area. Yellomundee Track attracts mountain bikers from across New South Wales. It sits in the south of Yarramundi.
