Woy Woy is a suburb of the Central Coast area of New South Wales and sits on the southern reaches of Brisbane Water. Located 79km to the north of Sydney, the suburb has a population of over 10,000 people.
History
Woy Woy was originally known as Webb’s Flat, after the first European settler to arrive in the Brisbane Water region in 1823. The name Woy Woy comes from an indigenous term which means ‘big lagoon’ or ‘much water.
This small coastal settlement underwent rapid residential development in the 1960’s following the electrification of the Main Northern rail line. This led to Woy Woy becoming a popular home for commuters who can reach Sydney’s central business district by rail in just over an hour.
Lifestyle and Entertainment
The impressive $24 million Peninsula Leisure Centre opened in 2005 and the town also boasts a wide range of retail businesses, shopping plazas and precincts along the waterfront.
